Most people think that getting a massage is purely for relaxation purposes and whilst it certainly is a very valuable tool for helping to relieve stress and anxiety, it has far wider benefits. Massage therapy is actually an ancient treatment that dates back thousands of years. Today, it is widely used in varying capacities, including as a core technique by chiropractors. This is because chiropractors specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal disorders. These principally affect the muscles, joints, tendons, ligaments, nerves and other supporting structures inside the body. Chiropractors may use a variety of different massage therapy techniques depending on the needs of the individual patient.

 

Types of massage therapy and their benefits

Not all chiropractors will offer every massage technique. However, each type of massage has its own benefits for the patient undergoing treatment. Here are some of the main types of massage therapy and the benefits that patients can expect to experience during and after their session.

 

Swedish massage. The most common variety, it is a gentle, full-body massage technique that uses kneading, deep circular motions, and passive joint movement techniques. Swedish massage is ideal for relieving tension and managing mild pain, such as that from tight muscles or chronic pain conditions such as fibromyalgia.

 

Deep tissue massage. As its name suggests, this massage is designed to target the deeper tissues inside the body and in order to achieve this, a great deal more pressure is needed than is used in a Swedish massage. Some people may find this level of pressure uncomfortable during treatment, but the effects of the massage are extremely effective at reducing moderate to severe muscle tension and chronic pain. It is also used to help with healing after an injury and this is because it increases blood flow around the body, enabling it to reach those areas which have been damaged. Many people who suffer from significant anxiety or stress will also find a deep tissue massage is effective at relieving their symptoms.

 

Trigger point massage. This technique is named for the fact that it is designed to target areas of tightness within the body called trigger points. By focusing on these areas with a combination of gentle, relaxing strokes and stronger, deeper pressure, the tightness within the trigger points can be relieved. This makes this treatment very effective for managing chronic pain that occurs as a result of an ongoing health condition, such as fibromyalgia, arthritis or autoimmune conditions.

 

Sports massage. Unsurprisingly, a sports massage is typically recommended for patients who have suffered an injury as a result of repetitive use of a muscle or muscles. This is because they improve circulation and blood flow to the area and this aids in swift healing and recovery. These usually occur as a result of a sports injury, such as tennis elbow or torn ACL. In addition to helping to relieve pain, anxiety and muscle tension, regular sports massages can increase your flexibility, improve your performance and even prevent future injuries from occurring.
